Abu Dhabi is the UAE's capital and its quieter, wealthier, more deliberate half. It sits 140 km down the E11 from Dubai — 90 minutes door to door — and it holds two of the region's genuinely world-class buildings. You can do it in a day, but only if you decide in advance which two or three things you are seeing.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque: the rules that matter

  • Free entry, but you must book a time slot online in advance — walk-ins are frequently refused.
  • Dress code: women cover hair, arms and legs; abayas are lent free at the entrance. Men need long trousers and sleeves; no shorts, no tight clothing for anyone.
  • Closed to visitors on Friday mornings until about 15:00, and during each prayer.
  • Best light is 09:00–10:30 or the hour before sunset, when the white marble turns gold and the crowds thin.
  • Allow 90 minutes including security, the underpass from the car park and the courtyard.

Eighty-two domes and the world's largest hand-knotted carpet — book a slot before you drive down.

The rest of the shortlist

  • Louvre Abu Dhabi (USD 17): Jean Nouvel's dome filters sunlight into a 'rain of light'; the collection spans 7,000 years. Two hours minimum. Closed Mondays.
  • Qasr Al Watan (USD 17): the working presidential palace, open to visitors — the library and the great hall are extraordinary.
  • Emirates Palace: a photo stop, or afternoon tea with gold leaf if you want the cliché.
  • Ferrari World and Yas Waterworld: a full day each, on Yas Island — do not try to combine with the mosque.
  • The Corniche: eight kilometres of waterfront, a public beach and the best lunch views.

A day that works

  1. 08:00 leave Dubai.
  2. 09:45 Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (booked slot).
  3. 11:30 drive to the Corniche; lunch by the water.
  4. 13:30 Louvre Abu Dhabi, two hours under the dome.
  5. 15:45 Qasr Al Watan or an Emirates Palace photo stop.
  6. 17:30 back in Dubai in time for dinner.

Practical notes

  • Abu Dhabi speed cameras have historically allowed a small buffer over the limit; Dubai's do not. Do not rely on either.
  • Salik (Dubai) and Darb (Abu Dhabi) tolls both apply on the route — rental companies rebill them later.
  • Friday is the day to avoid if the mosque is your priority.
  • Everything is far apart: Yas Island to the mosque is 30 minutes even without traffic.
