Four or five days in Istanbul and you will want a day out of the city — partly for the countryside, partly because the traffic and crowds are relentless. The good news: there is a mountain, a lake, a Black Sea beach and a former Ottoman capital all within two hours. The bad news: two of the popular options are mostly a bus ride.

Bursa: the one we recommend most

The first Ottoman capital sits under a mountain two hours away via the Osmangazi Bridge. You get the Grand Mosque with its twenty domes, the Green Tomb, a covered silk bazaar that predates Istanbul's, İskender kebab where it was invented, and a cable car up Uludağ where there is snow from December to March. It is a proper city, not a tourist stop, and a day is genuinely enough.

You do not have to go far: the Asian shore and the islands are day trips in themselves.

Sapanca and Şile: read the season

Sapanca is a lake ringed by hotels and, in Maşukiye, restaurants built over trout streams. It is beautiful in spring and autumn and packed at weekends — go midweek or not at all. Şile and Ağva are Black Sea: wide sand, cold water, and a river you can boat up at Ağva. Both are summer destinations; in winter they are shuttered and grey.

How to do it

  • Ferries to the islands leave from Kabataş and Eminönü and take Istanbulkart — no booking needed except summer weekends.
  • For Bursa, the fast ferry to Mudanya plus a shuttle beats driving in traffic; total 2 to 2.5 hours.
  • A private car with driver for a full day costs USD 120–200 and makes sense for three or more people.
  • Organised group tours to Bursa and Sapanca run daily from around USD 40 but include long shopping stops — ask before booking.
  • Avoid weekends everywhere: Istanbul residents fill these places on Saturday and Sunday.

And if you have two days

Fly to Cappadocia. It is 75 minutes each way, and a two-day trip with a cave hotel and a sunrise balloon flight is the single most memorable thing most of our clients do in Türkiye. It is a different order of experience from anything within driving distance of Istanbul.
