UAE Student Visa: University Sponsorship & Documents
International students and parents choosing a university or school in the UAE
Short answer
A UAE student visa is a residence permit sponsored by a licensed UAE university or school. Outstanding students and graduates may later qualify for the 10-year Golden Visa.
A UAE student visa is a residence permit that allows you to live in the country while you study. It is sponsored by the licensed university, college or school that admits you, not by an employer or relative. Once the visa is issued you receive an Emirates ID, which you use for banking, a SIM card and daily life.
Who can apply for a UAE student visa?
Any international student with an admission offer from a licensed UAE institution can start the process. The institution must be recognised by the education authority, for example the KHDA in Dubai, and it files the visa application on your behalf. Younger students are usually sponsored through their school, with a parent's documents as part of the file.
How does the sponsorship work?
The sponsoring institution submits your application to the immigration authority, which is ICP at federal level and GDRFA Dubai in Dubai. After approval you complete the medical test, biometrics and Emirates ID. Because the visa is tied to your enrolment, it normally ends if you leave the programme or change institution without moving the sponsorship.
Student visa or tourist entry: what is the difference?
| Student visa | Tourist entry | |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Live and study in the UAE | Short visit |
| Sponsor | University or school | None, or hotel/host |
| Documents | Admission, medical test, Emirates ID | Passport and entry permit |
| Right to study | Yes, full enrolment | No |
Can outstanding students get a Golden Visa?
Yes. The UAE offers the 10-year Golden Visa to outstanding students and graduates, usually based on top academic results and a recommendation from the institution or the relevant authority. If your grades are strong, ask your university about this route early, because the criteria and the nomination process are set by the authorities and can change.
Can my family join me?
A student visa does not automatically allow you to sponsor relatives. Parents who live in the UAE can sponsor children under their own residence, and students who later move to employment or a longer visa can look at family sponsorship. We review your plan so you do not choose the wrong route at the start.
How does DXB.IST help with the student visa?
We start with a free consultation, help you compare licensed institutions and prepare the document checklist, attestations and translations. We coordinate with the university's admissions and visa office, book medical-test and Emirates ID appointments through government-approved typing centres, and work with licensed lawyers if a case becomes complex. Our travel desk arranges flights, airport transfers and a hotel for your first nights, and we help with housing, banking and settling in. We are not a government body and cannot guarantee a visa decision.
