Dubai Beaches: Free Public Sand, Beach Clubs and Which One Suits You

A guide to Dubai's beaches: free public stretches with showers, family-friendly options, beach clubs and day passes, sea temperature by month, women-only days and what the rules actually are.

The beach is the reason many people come to Dubai between November and April, and the city has organised its coast better than almost anywhere in the region: free public beaches with showers, lifeguards and running tracks sit beside private clubs with infinity pools. The choice is less about money than about what kind of day you want.

Beach clubs and day passes

If you want a lounger, a pool, food service and no sand in your bag, a day pass at a beach club runs USD 40–120 per person, often with part of it redeemable against food and drink. Nikki Beach, Cove Beach, Zero Gravity and the hotel clubs on the Palm are the best known. Many hotels also sell pool-and-beach day passes to non-guests at USD 35–70, which is the value option and rarely advertised — ask us and we will book it.

Rules, etiquette and safety

  • Swimwear is fine on the beach and at the pool; cover up when you leave — walking through a mall in a bikini is an offence.
  • Topless sunbathing is illegal, as is drinking alcohol on a public beach.
  • Photographing other people, especially women and children, without consent is a criminal matter — be careful with wide shots.
  • Swim between the flags. Currents at Sunset Beach and Black Palace can be strong; several beaches now have smart lifebuoy stations.
  • Al Mamzar and some public beaches have women-and-children-only days — check the sign at the gate.
  • Jellyfish appear occasionally between May and July; lifeguards post warnings.

Our pick for each type of traveller

  • Families with small children: La Mer or Al Mamzar — shade, shallow water, splash parks.
  • Couples: Black Palace at sunset, then dinner at Madinat Jumeirah.
  • Active travellers: Kite Beach for paddleboarding, kitesurfing and the 14 km running track.
  • One splurge day: a beach club on the Palm with a pool overlooking the skyline.
