Opening a Bank Account in Türkiye as a Foreigner

Opening a Bank Account in Türkiye as a Foreigner

Residents, property buyers, investors and company owners

BusinessIstanbulReviewed 20 October 2026

Short answer

Foreigners can open personal and company bank accounts in Türkiye, usually with a passport, a Turkish tax number and proof of address; many banks prefer a residence permit, and policies differ by bank and nationality.

A Turkish bank account is the base for almost everything else: paying rent, receiving a salary, buying property and running a company. Opening one as a foreigner is possible, but banks apply their own rules, so preparation saves weeks.

Can a foreigner open a bank account in Türkiye?

Yes. Both residents and, in some cases, non-residents can open accounts. Many banks prefer or require a residence permit, while some accept non-residents with a passport and a tax number. Banks also run extra know-your-customer checks and ask about the source of funds, and policies differ by bank and by nationality. We confirm the current position with the bank before you visit.

What do you need for a personal account?

  • A valid passport, with a translation where requested.
  • A Turkish tax number (vergi kimlik numarası), obtained from a tax office or online with your passport.
  • Proof of address, such as a residence permit, a utility bill or a rental contract.
  • A Turkish mobile number, which banks use for online banking and verification.
  • Details of your income or source of funds if the bank asks.

How do you get a Turkish tax number?

The tax number is issued by the Revenue Administration. You can request it at a tax office with your passport, or online in some cases. It is free of charge for most individuals and is also needed to buy property, sign a long-term rental or set up a company. We usually obtain it first because the bank will ask for it.

Why do property buyers need a Turkish account?

Funds for a property purchase normally arrive through a Turkish bank, which can issue the foreign-exchange purchase certificate (DAB). For citizenship by investment files this certificate is an important proof that the money entered the country. Opening the account early, before the purchase date, avoids delays on title-deed day.

How does a company account work?

Once your Ltd. Şti. or A.Ş. is registered, the bank asks for the trade registry documents, the tax plate, the signature circular (imza sirküleri) issued by a notary, the articles of association and identity documents for the managers and partners. Banks may also ask about the business activity and expected transactions. Our company formation service prepares these papers so the account can be opened soon after registration.

What can go wrong?

  • A branch refuses an application that another branch of the same bank would accept.
  • Documents are rejected because the translation or notarisation is missing.
  • The bank asks for more proof of source of funds than expected.
  • The address proof does not match the passport or residence details.

How much does it cost?

Account fees, card fees and transfer charges are set by each bank and change over time, so we do not quote figures here. We ask the bank for its current tariff and share it with you in writing before you decide.

How does DXB.IST help?

We start with a free consultation and check what you need the account for: daily life, a property purchase, a citizenship file or a company. We obtain the tax number, prepare the document checklist and translations, choose a bank that suits your profile, book the appointment and accompany you to the branch. We work with licensed lawyers and approved translation centres. We are not a bank or a government body, and we cannot guarantee that a bank will accept an application. After the account is open we support renewals, family accounts and relocation through our travel desk.
