Short-Term Residence Permit in Türkiye: How to Apply
Long-stay visitors, remote workers and retirees in Istanbul
Short answer
A short-term (tourism) residence permit lets foreigners stay in Türkiye beyond the visa-free or 90-day limit, with a rental contract or other accommodation proof, health insurance and proof of financial means, issued by the Presidency of Migration Management.
Many visitors can stay in Türkiye only for a limited period without a permit. A short-term residence permit (ikamet) is the usual answer for those who want to live in Istanbul for months or years without working for a Turkish employer: remote workers, retirees, long-stay tourists and people exploring the city before a bigger commitment.
Who qualifies for a short-term residence permit?
Foreign nationals who can show a valid purpose of stay, an address in Türkiye, health insurance and enough financial means to support themselves. The Presidency of Migration Management (Göç İdaresi) decides each case. Tourism is the most common basis, but the permit can also rest on property ownership, which is covered separately.
What do I need to prove?
- Accommodation, usually a rental contract or title deed.
- Health insurance valid in Türkiye, for the permit period.
- Financial means, shown with bank statements or income evidence.
- A clean record and no entry ban.
How do I apply?
Applications are filed online through the e-Ikamet system, followed by an appointment at the provincial migration office, where documents are checked and biometrics taken. Applying before your permitted stay ends is important; applications are normally filed while you are legally in the country.
How long does the permit last?
Short-term permits are issued for a limited period, commonly up to 1 or 2 years depending on your basis, and they can be renewed if you still meet the conditions. Processing times vary by office, and we do not promise a date.
Can my family be included?
Your spouse and dependent children may apply alongside you, each with their own file and documents. Where a relative has a different relationship to a resident, the family residence service may fit better.
What does it cost?
Costs include the government permit fee and card charge, which change, translations and notarisation, the insurance premium and the rent. We give the current government figures in writing at consultation.
How does DXB.IST help?
