Study in Dubai: University Admission in the UAE
School leavers, international students and their families
Short answer
Students can apply to federal, local, private and international branch-campus universities in the UAE. Each institution sets its entry rules, and the university sponsors the student visa after acceptance.
The UAE offers federal and local universities, private universities and branch campuses of international institutions. Dubai International Academic City and Dubai Knowledge Park host many of them, and Abu Dhabi has its own well-known institutions. The right choice depends on programme, budget and recognition of the degree.
What types of universities can you attend in the UAE?
| Federal / local university | Private university or branch campus | |
|---|---|---|
| Ownership | Government-funded | Privately run, some linked to foreign universities |
| Typical location | Across the emirates | Dubai free zones, Abu Dhabi and other emirates |
| Teaching language | Arabic and English, by programme | Mostly English |
| Fees | Vary by university and nationality | Vary widely by university and programme |
| Licensing | Federal licensing | Federal licence or free-zone permit |
How do you check that a programme is accredited?
Always check the programme's accreditation or permit before paying a deposit. Federal licensing is handled by the Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA) under the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MoHESR), while institutions in Dubai free zones operate under permits from KHDA. We help you verify the status of your shortlisted programmes.
What are the typical entry requirements?
- A high-school certificate, with an equivalency issued by the Ministry of Education for certificates from abroad.
- Transcripts with the required attestation and translation.
- An English test such as IELTS or TOEFL, or the university's own test.
- A valid passport and photos.
- Sometimes an entrance exam, portfolio or interview, depending on the programme.
How does the student visa work?
After acceptance, the university sponsors the student's residence visa. The process usually includes a medical test, Emirates ID and a residence stamp, handled by the university with the immigration authority. Some universities need a security deposit or proof of accommodation, and requirements vary by emirate. See our student visa service for the full path.
Can outstanding students get a Golden Visa?
Outstanding students and graduates may qualify for the Golden Visa under its student category, subject to the criteria the authority publishes. This is not automatic, so we check eligibility case by case and explain the current conditions. Families who want to stay together can also look at family sponsorship.
What can slow an application down?
- Certificates without the correct attestation or equivalency.
- An English score below the programme's requirement.
- Choosing a programme that is not accredited.
- Applying after the university's intake window has closed.
How much does it cost?
Tuition and living costs vary widely by university, programme and emirate, so we do not quote figures here. We collect current fee schedules from your shortlisted universities and share them with you in writing before you apply.
How does DXB.IST help?
We start with a free consultation about your grades, budget and goals, then prepare a shortlist of accredited programmes. We help with applications, document translation and attestation, equivalency, the acceptance letter and the student visa file, then arrange housing and airport pickup. We work with licensed partners and approved typing centres. We are not a university or a government body, admission is decided by the university, and we cannot guarantee acceptance.
