Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) to the City: Every Transfer Option Compared
How to get from Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gökçen to Sultanahmet, Taksim, the Bosphorus and Kadıköy: metro, Havaist bus, taxi, private transfer — times, prices, luggage and the traps to avoid.
Istanbul Airport (IST) is 40 km north-west of the Old City; Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is 45 km south-east on the Asian side. Both are served by metro, bus, taxi and private transfer, and the right choice depends on your luggage, your hotel and the time of day. Below is what we tell every client, plus why our packages simply include a private car.
From Istanbul Airport (IST)
| Option | To Sultanahmet | To Taksim / Bosphorus | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private transfer (pre-booked) | 50–70 min | 45–60 min | USD 35–55 per car | Meet & greet, child seats, fixed price — what we include |
| Taxi (official yellow) | 50–70 min | 45–60 min | TRY 1,200–1,800 (≈ USD 35–50) | Metered; check the meter is on; toll added |
| Metro M11 + M2 | 80–90 min | 60–70 min | ≈ TRY 100 | Gayrettepe interchange; lifts exist but stairs at some exits |
| Havaist bus | 80–100 min | 70–90 min | ≈ TRY 200 | Departs every 30 min; luggage under the bus; traffic-dependent |
| Rental car | — | — | — | Don't. Parking and traffic in the centre are brutal. |
The metro is excellent value for solo travellers with one bag heading to Taksim or the Bosphorus; for families with luggage, or anyone landing after 21:00, the private transfer's fixed price and meet-and-greet is worth every dirham.
From Sabiha Gökçen (SAW)
| Option | To Sultanahmet | To Kadıköy / Asian side | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | 60–90 min | 40–50 min | USD 40–60 per car | Bridge traffic is the variable |
| Taxi | 60–90 min | 40–50 min | TRY 1,300–2,000 | Longer and pricier to the European side |
| Metro M4 + Marmaray | 75–90 min | 45 min | ≈ TRY 100 | M4 to Ayrılık Çeşmesi, Marmaray under the Bosphorus to Sirkeci |
| Havabus | 90–120 min | 60 min | ≈ TRY 200 | To Taksim or Kadıköy |
Taxi traps and how to avoid them
- Use only the official taxi ranks; ignore anyone approaching you inside the terminal.
- Ask for the meter ('taksimetre'); if the driver refuses or quotes a flat fee, take the next car.
- Pay in lira; keep small notes. Card is accepted in most airport taxis but not guaranteed.
- Apps: BiTaksi and Uber (which books yellow taxis) show the estimated fare and remove the negotiation.
Timing your arrival
Morning flights from Dubai land at IST around 12:30–13:30, before the afternoon rush; you'll be at your hotel within an hour. Flights landing 17:00–20:00 hit peak traffic on the O-7 and the bridges — allow 90 minutes. After 22:00 the roads are clear. On Fridays and public holidays, the Bosphorus bridges can add 30–45 minutes for SAW arrivals heading to Europe.
Istanbulkart
If you plan to use ferries, trams or the metro at all, buy an Istanbulkart from the machines in the arrivals hall (TRY 130 for the card) and load TRY 300–500. One card works for a family — tap for each person.
