The Turkish Hammam Explained: What Happens, What to Wear and Which One to Book

A first-timer's guide to the Istanbul hammam: the steps of a traditional bath, what to wear, modesty and gender rules, prices, tipping, and the historic bathhouses worth the money.

A hammam is not a spa treatment with a Turkish name. It is a 500-year-old civic ritual that used to be how a city washed, gossiped and celebrated, and the good ones still feel like that. The reason first-timers are anxious is simple: nobody explains the sequence. So here it is, from the door to the tea afterwards.

What actually happens, step by step

  1. You are given a peştemal (a thin checked cotton wrap), wooden sandals and a locker. You undress and wrap the peştemal around you — it stays on the whole time.
  2. You enter the hararet, the hot marble room, and lie on the göbek taşı, the heated navel stone in the middle. You stay there 15–20 minutes doing nothing while the heat opens your skin.
  3. An attendant scrubs you with a kese, a coarse mitt. This is the part people talk about afterwards: grey rolls of dead skin come off and it is both undignified and extremely satisfying.
  4. The foam wash: an attendant fills a cloth bag with air and soap and covers you in warm foam, then washes and massages you through it.
  5. Rinsing with copper bowls of warm water, then cool water over your head.
  6. You are wrapped in dry towels and taken to the cool room to drink tea or sherbet and do nothing for twenty minutes. This is not optional; it is half the point.

Modesty, gender and what to wear

  • Historic hammams have either separate men's and women's sections, or separate hours. Attendants are always the same gender as the guests.
  • The peştemal stays on throughout. Women may wear bikini bottoms or swimwear underneath; men usually wear underwear or swim shorts.
  • Nudity is not expected and is not the norm — this differs from what many visitors imagine.
  • Bring nothing: soap, towels, sandals and shampoo are provided. Leave jewellery in the locker.
  • Couples' hammams for mixed bathing exist in modern spa hotels, not in the historic bathhouses.

Practical notes

  • Book the historic ones a day or two ahead, especially Hürrem Sultan.
  • Allow 90 minutes to two hours. Do not schedule anything tight afterwards; you will be pleasantly useless.
  • Tip 15–20% to the attendant, in cash, at the end.
  • Do not go on a full stomach or after alcohol. Drink water before and after.
  • Avoid if you are pregnant, have heart or blood-pressure conditions, or have had recent surgery.
  • Children are usually welcome in family sections from about age six.
