For travellers from Dubai and the Gulf, Istanbul's biggest luxury is weather. It rains, it snows, leaves change colour, and in summer the Bosphorus breeze keeps evenings at 24 °C while the Gulf sits at 40. That variety means the 'best' month depends on what you want: sunshine, low prices, festivals or empty museums. Below is the honest month-by-month picture from our Istanbul team.

Quick answer

  • Best overall: late April to mid-June, and mid-September to early November — 18–26 °C, long days, moderate crowds.
  • Best for Gulf summer escapes: June to August — warm but 10–15 °C cooler than Dubai; expect crowds and higher hotel rates in July–August.
  • Best value: November to March (excluding New Year) — hotel prices drop 30–40%, museums are quiet, and snow on the domes is unforgettable.

Ramadan and Eid in Istanbul

Istanbul during Ramadan is atmospheric rather than restrictive: restaurants stay open all day, but the iftar tables set up around the Blue Mosque and the illuminated 'mahya' messages strung between minarets are worth planning around. Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are Turkish public holidays too, so the city fills with domestic visitors; museums are open but busier, and Bosphorus cruises should be booked a week ahead. Because the Islamic calendar shifts about 11 days a year, check the exact dates for your travel year.

Summer from the Gulf: how to do it well

  • Stay on the Bosphorus (Beşiktaş, Ortaköy, Bebek) rather than deep in Sultanahmet — it's 3–5 °C cooler and the evenings are the point.
  • Do the Old City early: Hagia Sophia at 9:00, lunch indoors, Topkapı after 15:00.
  • Plan one day on the Princes' Islands and one on the Asian side (Kadıköy, Moda) — locals' summer.
  • Book Bosphorus cruises for sunset, not midday.

What to pack

Spring and autumn: layers and a light waterproof. Summer: linen, comfortable walking shoes (Istanbul is hilly and cobbled), a scarf for mosque visits. Winter: a proper coat, waterproof shoes and gloves — and leave room in the suitcase, because winter sales in Nişantaşı and İstinye Park are excellent.

Frequently asked questions

May and October are the sweet spot: 18–26 °C, long days and manageable crowds. For Gulf travellers escaping summer heat, June to September is still pleasant by the Bosphorus.
