Where to Stay in Istanbul: A Neighbourhood Guide for First-Timers

Sultanahmet, Beyoğlu, Beşiktaş, Kadıköy or the Bosphorus? An honest comparison of Istanbul's neighbourhoods for tourists — noise, transport, prices, families and views.

Istanbul is enormous and the traffic is real, so the neighbourhood you book decides how much of your holiday you spend in a taxi. There is no single best area — there is the right area for the trip you are taking. Below are the five we book most, with the trade-offs we tell clients on the phone.

Sultanahmet — for a first, history-focused visit

You can walk to Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı and the Basilica Cistern, and be inside at opening time before the tour buses. In return: restaurants are touristy, the streets empty after 21:00, and you will take a taxi or tram to every dinner worth having. Best for three- or four-night first visits, and for families who want everything within a pram's reach.

Beyoğlu and Galata — for restaurants and walking

Karaköy, Galata and Çukurcuma put you among the city's best food, coffee and rooftops, ten minutes on foot from the water and one tram stop from the Old City. Avoid rooms directly on İstiklal Avenue unless you sleep through noise; one street back is a different world.

From Karaköy you can walk to a ferry and be on the Asian side in twenty minutes.

Beşiktaş and Ortaköy — for the Bosphorus

This is where you stay if the water is the point: Bosphorus hotels, ferry piers, parks and a young, local crowd. Transfers to the Old City are 20–30 minutes; in exchange you get the best evenings in the city and, in summer, temperatures three to five degrees below Sultanahmet.

Kadıköy and Moda — for a second visit

The Asian side is where Istanbul lives: markets, bars, bookshops, sea-front walks and prices a third lower. It is a poor choice for a first three-day trip and an excellent one for a week or a return visit. Ferries run until midnight and cost almost nothing.

Three rules we give every client

  1. Book within 400 metres of a tram, metro or ferry stop — it matters more than the hotel's star rating.
  2. Ask for a room away from the street in Beyoğlu, and above the third floor anywhere near a mosque if you are a light sleeper.
  3. Cobbled hills are everywhere: if you travel with a pram or heavy cases, check the hotel's street on a map first, or ask us.
