Dubai Desert & Desert Safari
The dunes that start 30 minutes from the towers — Lahbab's red sand, the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve and Al Marmoom — and the evening safari that is Dubai's most-booked experience.
Leave the Sheikh Zayed Road corridor and the desert begins almost at once. Three areas matter to visitors: the Lahbab dunes to the east, whose iron-rich sand glows red at sunset and whose 'Big Red' dune is the dune-bashing playground; the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, 225 km² fenced in 2003 to protect Arabian oryx and gazelle; and Al Marmoom to the south, with its lakes, cycle track and Bedouin-style camps.
What a good evening safari includes
- Pick-up around 15:00, 45–60 minutes' drive to the dunes in a 4x4.
- Dune driving — fast and bumpy on the Lahbab circuit, slow and wildlife-focused in the reserve.
- Sunset stop on a high dune, sandboarding, a short camel ride.
- Camp: Arabic coffee and dates, henna, falconry display, shisha, a barbecue buffet and a show (belly dance or tanoura), back in the city by 21:30.
Choosing well
Cheap safaris pack 30 cars into the same circuit; premium ones use the reserve or private camps with a handful of vehicles. November to March is ideal — daytime 25°C, evenings cool enough for the fire. In summer the desert exceeds 40°C and camps run only after dark. Pregnant travellers, people with back problems and children under about four should skip dune bashing; every operator can drive the flat route instead.
