Istanbul in 4 Days: The Itinerary We Build for First-Time Visitors from Dubai
A day-by-day 4-day Istanbul itinerary for travellers from Dubai and the Gulf: Old City, Bosphorus, bazaars, Asian side and Princes' Islands — with timings, halal food stops and how to avoid queues.
Istanbul rewards sequencing. Do the Old City on a cruise-ship day and you'll queue for two hours; do the Bosphorus at noon and you'll miss the light. This four-day plan is built around opening hours, prayer times, light and traffic, and it's the one we hand to clients arriving on the morning flight from Dubai.
Day 1 — Arrive, settle, sunset on the water
Land at IST around midday, private transfer to Sultanahmet or the Bosphorus (45–60 minutes). Check in, lunch near the hotel — try a lokanta (tradesmen's restaurant) for slow-cooked stews. At 17:00 board the Bosphorus sunset cruise from Kabataş: two continents, two bridges, Ottoman palaces and the Old City silhouette in gold. Dinner in Karaköy or Ortaköy afterwards; early night.
Day 2 — The Old City, properly
- 08:30 Hagia Sophia — be at the door at opening; the light through the dome is best before 10:00.
- 09:45 Blue Mosque — closed to visitors during prayer times; your guide times it.
- 10:45 Topkapı Palace with the Harem and the Sacred Relics rooms (2.5 hours).
- 13:15 Ottoman lunch near the Hippodrome.
- 14:30 Basilica Cistern, then the Hippodrome obelisks.
- 16:00 Free time: Arasta Bazaar behind the Blue Mosque for calmer shopping, or a hamam (Hürrem Sultan or Cağaloğlu).
Day 3 — Bazaars, Galata and the new city
Morning food tour through the Grand Bazaar, Süleymaniye and the Spice Market, finishing with the Eminönü fish sandwich (around 14:30). Walk across Galata Bridge, take the Tünel funicular up to Galata Tower and İstiklal Avenue. Afternoon: Galata Tower views, the vintage tram, and Nişantaşı or İstinye Park if shopping is the goal. Dinner with a view at a rooftop in Karaköy or a meyhane in Beyoğlu for mezze.
Day 4 — Choose your ending
- Families: Princes' Islands — ferry, bicycles, seafood lunch, sunset ferry back.
- Culture lovers: Balat and Fener colourful streets, Chora Church mosaics, then the Asian side (Kadıköy market, Moda seafront) by ferry.
- Shoppers: İstinye Park or Zorlu Center in the morning, Turkish delight at Hafız Mustafa, evening whirling dervish ceremony.
- Extension: swap Day 4 for the 2-day Cappadocia trip with a dawn balloon flight.
Practical notes
- Buy an Istanbulkart at the airport for ferries, trams and metro; load 300 TRY for four days.
- Museum tickets: Hagia Sophia (visitor gallery), Topkapı and the Cistern have separate tickets — pre-book to skip queues, or take our guided Old City walk with tickets included.
- Prayer times: mosques close to visitors for 30–60 minutes around each prayer; Friday midday closure is longest.
- Dress: shoulders and knees covered in mosques; scarves provided but bring your own.
- Food: Istanbul is overwhelmingly halal; the Old City has no alcohol-free issue at all.
