Istanbul to Dubai: The Complete First-Timer's Travel Guide

Dubai is the easiest long-weekend abroad you can take from Istanbul: a four-hour flight, no jet lag, warm sea in winter, and a city that has turned hospitality into a competitive sport. It is also a place where a little preparation makes a huge difference to what you pay and how much you enjoy it. This guide is what we send our Turkish clients before their first trip.

Getting there

Turkish Airlines and Emirates fly non-stop from Istanbul Airport (IST) to Dubai International (DXB) up to nine times a day; Pegasus, flydubai and AJet fly from Sabiha Gökçen (SAW). Flight time is about 4 hours 15 minutes. Dubai is one hour ahead of Türkiye. DXB is 15–25 minutes by car from Downtown and the Marina; the metro also runs from Terminals 1 and 3 to most of the city.

Visa for Turkish citizens

UAE entry rules for Turkish passport holders have changed several times in recent years, so always confirm the current requirement before you fly. In most cases an electronic visa can be arranged through your airline, hotel or a licensed agency within 24–72 hours, and some travellers are eligible for visa on arrival. When to go

November to March is the season: 22–30 °C, sea warm enough to swim, every outdoor attraction open. April and October are hot but manageable. June to September is 40 °C-plus — hotels are cheap and everything is air-conditioned, but you will live indoors after 10 am. If you can only come in summer, choose a beach resort with a shaded pool and plan desert and city activities for early morning or after sunset.

Where to stay

• Downtown (Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall): best for first visits, walkable to the fountain and the mall, 10 minutes to Old Dubai. Rove Downtown for value, Address Downtown for luxury.
• Dubai Marina / JBR: beach, restaurants and nightlife along a walkable promenade; 25 minutes from Downtown by metro.
• Palm Jumeirah: resort life — Atlantis, private beaches, waterparks. Best for families staying five nights or more.
• Deira / Bur Dubai: the old city; cheapest hotels, best souks and Indian food; further from the beach.

What it costs

What to wear and how to behave

Dubai is relaxed by Gulf standards but conservative by Istanbul standards. In malls, souks and old neighbourhoods cover shoulders and knees; swimwear stays at the beach and pool. Public displays of affection are frowned upon. Alcohol is served in licensed hotels and restaurants only. During Ramadan, eat and drink discreetly in public during daylight hours — many restaurants stay open behind screens.

A 4-day itinerary that works

1. Day 1: Arrive, check in Downtown, sunset at Burj Khalifa Level 124, Dubai Fountain from an abra on the lake.
2. Day 2: Morning in Old Dubai — Al Fahidi, abra across the Creek, Gold and Spice Souks. Afternoon desert safari with BBQ dinner.
3. Day 3: Beach morning at JBR or the Palm; private yacht cruise at sunset around the Palm and Burj Al Arab.
4. Day 4: Abu Dhabi day trip (Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Louvre Abu Dhabi) or a free day for Dubai Mall, Miracle Garden and Global Village in season.

Practical notes for Turkish travellers

• Currency is the dirham (AED), pegged at 3.67 to the US dollar. Cards work everywhere; keep AED 200 in cash for taxis and souks.
• Turkish is not widely spoken, but Arabic and English are, and our guides speak Turkish.
• Turkish coffee is easy to find; Turkish restaurants are excellent in Al Barsha and Jumeirah.
• Sockets are UK-style three-pin (type G). Bring an adapter.
• Friday is the holy day; the weekend is Saturday–Sunday. Many attractions open later on Friday mornings.
